When I am in Los Angeles, I’m always praying for the sun to come out. But in Phnom Penh, it is a given.
As a consequence, what happens is that during the day, I love the sun it puts me in a good mood, but your actively seeking shade, and the strong desire to jump into a pool and swim, because the truth is the sun is super awesome but it is very very hot.
Then, this becomes interesting because a new pattern which has emerged from myself is that I tried to sleep really early and also conversely wake up very early because it is like literally the only time of the day where you could go out on a lovely walk by the water side, get the morning breeze, without the 105° sun scorching you alive?
And actually what’s super interesting is that if you live in Cambodia, assuming that traditionally you did not have air conditioning and tinted vehicles, it made a lot of sense to develop a darker pigment.
I also wonder… If shortness is actually an evolutionary trait to somehow offset heat and or effort and or, to reduce energy expenditure?
This is typically why in countries with a surplus of red meat consumption, people are taller stronger, better. And perhaps in malnourished countries, people tend to be shorter and weaker because they just don’t have access to red meat.
Even myself, i grew up in the states eating nothing but meat and rice as a kid, and my favorite as a kid was always galbi, beef short ribs, I didn’t eat a single vegetable until I was maybe like 21 years old, when I was recording Cindy in college, and she thought that it was very bizarre that I did not eat any vegetables.
Anyways, taking it back to weather, the funny thing is certainly there is a hierarchy of whether for example, I don’t think anybody would want to be in the middle of the desert in Dubai, during the hottest months. Similarly speaking, nobody would probably volunteer want to be in Siberia during the coldest months either.
However there then becomes a state in which things become a little bit more subjective.
For example, even though I prefer the weather in Phnom Penh over LA, technically I think I actually walk more in LA because it is not so hot during the day.
What’s interesting about the heat is that I could tolerate it because I have like very low body fat percentage, I’m like only 5% or so, and I love the sun! But even for myself, it becomes too much. The heat just kind of slows you down, even if you’re cover it up with an umbrella during the middle of the day, the heat just kind of wears you down.
As a consequence, the strategy then becomes how to live your best life, given the fact that the heat is so intense.
And then also I guess the thought is trying to think about this critically, how much of where you live is actually something you want, like are you actively desiring to live in that place and climate? Or do you have no option?
This is where optionality is important.
For example if you live in Chicago, do you live in Chicago because you love Chicago and want to be in Chicago and you’re a billionaire, or simply because you must because your job is there?
