Featuring heavy metal icon and musician Kasey Karlsen (great name!), the latest dev diary for Astral Clocktower Studios’ dark fantasy ARPG Kristala explores its sound design.
In addition to Kasey Karlsen, this new Kristala Dev Diary also features David Simonich, Joey Sourlis, Jessie Grace (Full Metal Jessie), and Paxton Grizzle – whose guttural screams and growls brought Kristala’s cursed enemies and bosses to life.
Be sure to listen in to the sounds of a cursed world with the new dev diary for Kristala below:
Discussing her approach to voicing one of the game’s bosses, Kasey Karlsen said the following:
“I think Saphael’s design really did it for me because I’m a very visual person.
You can tell she’s tethered to something deeply painful.
I tried to convey that while she may be evil, she’s also someone who is suffering.”
Kristala composer Adeel Jafree also said the following:
“Hearing those gritty, distorted screams and roars really gave me the confidence to push metal influences in the soundtrack, especially during boss fights.
It’s been really fun leaning into those inspirations to create hard-hitting drums and driving rhythm guitar sections that heighten the intensity.”
Combining the swift, punishing combat of Dark Souls and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice with a dynamic difficulty system, Kristala features atmospheric, story-driven worldbuilding within the mystical realm of Ailur.
Kristala is now available in Early Access via both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
For those on consoles, a free Kristala demo is also available on PlayStation.
