Roblox Age Verification Changes Explained: How to Get Around Them (and Why You Shouldn’t)

If you’re a Roblox player under the age of 21, it won’t be news to you that things have taken a turn in 2026. Whereas before you could chat to all and sundry, now your conversational options are limited in the extreme.

This new regime began in January, and doesn’t look likely to end any time soon.

Under pressure from governments, parents, and litigious safety advocates, Roblox has reluctantly agreed to drop its easily trickable birthday-based age verification barriers in favor of technical methods that you can’t circumvent without taking an ill-advised walk on the wild side.

How the New System Works

The new Roblox age verification system works by estimating your age based on a selfie that you submit. Using clever AI wizardry, the platform looks at various facial markers to place you in one of six different age brackets: under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, and 21+.

Then, it only lets you communicate with other people in the same bracket.

On the face of it, this seems like a pretty good idea. Sure, it means that 12-year-old Peter can no longer chat with his IRL bestie, 13-year-old Frederick, but on the plus side neither child can be contacted by 57-year-old Raymond.

Players under 9 can only play with parental consent, which can be fiddly and frustrating for players and guardians alike. Meanwhile, players 13 and over can submit government-issued ID to override errors in the platform’s age-estimation.

This same group can take advantage of Trusted Connections, a feature that allows them to chat with real-life contacts.

The Problems

The main issue for many is that you have to submit biometric data. While Roblox assures users that their data is safe, there’s no question that many young players – and their guardians – will be uncomfortable with the idea of Roblox snapping a picture of their face.

Superficially at least, asking children to submit biometric data feels like an odd way to safeguard their privacy.

And even if you decide to take the plunge, despite your reservations, you’ll only be able to chat with a very particular group of friends in a narrow age band, leaving others – or indeed you – out in the cold.

Plus, sometimes the AI gets it wrong, identifying you as older or younger than you actually are and therefore locking you out of your peer group as far as chat is concerned. If you’re 13 or over you can get past this by sharing even more private information with Roblox, but younger players have no such recourse.

How to Get Around It

You won’t like it, but the answer is: don’t.

For all that Roblox’s new age verification system is fiddly, unnerving, and altogether imperfect, it’s there for a reason. Online safety measures are hugely important in principle, even if you don’t feel like they’re benefiting you. They’re also the law.

There are options for players willing to step outside the legal guidelines that keep us all safe. You can try submitting a selfie of somebody else, or getting hold of an adult’s identity documents.

But these workarounds may well get you banned from Roblox altogether.

And grounded.

Worse still, undermining this policy might just make Roblox that little bit less safe in future, exposing children who are younger and more vulnerable than you to the risk of real harm.
