To obtain the Boreal Rod, you need to be able to access the Boreal Pines. Once there, look for the NPC called Marvin, who stands approximately at the coordinates: 21585, 135, 4150. The rod is located close by to Marvin and costs a total of 18K in-game coins, which makes it quite the bargain!
To reach the Boreal Pines, you must sail towards the portal that takes you to the Northern Expedition island. Access the portal to be teleported to a new map, where you can find Northern Expedition, and now, the Boreal Pines.
The Boreal Pines island is next to Northern Expedition, so you can’t miss it! However, if you’ve spent time on Northern Expedition, you’ll know all about the temperature mechanics.
Hopefully, you already have some equippable gear that keeps you warm, which you can obtain via Northern Expedition. As long as you manage your temperature levels, you can make it to Marvin to purchase the Boreal Rod. Just be careful of the water at the Boreal Pines, as it deals damage!
When using the Boreal Rod in Fisch, you have a 40% chance of catching a fish with the Boreal mutation. The selling value of fish with this mutation increases by 4x. Aside from Appraising, the Boreal Rod is the only other way of getting the Boreal mutation. With Appraisal, the chance is even lower.
At such a low price, the Boreal Rod is certainly worth obtaining. Considering it only costs 18K in-game coins, the 40% chance of getting Boreal fish is a great addition. With a high chance of gaining a rare mutation, the selling value of the fish you catch will be much higher thanks to the 4x multiplier.
Stat-wise, it’s not the most impressive, but it’s a good option for those still in the early game. Sometimes, a weaker fishing rod is needed for certain quests, especially if they require more common fish.
