In a wide-ranging survey on national identity, 89% of Canadians identified nature as a key element of what it means to be Canadian — ranking it higher than hockey, medicare and even our flag!
At a time when the world seems increasingly divided, nature is emerging as a rare point of unity. Support for this view cuts across regions, age groups, and political lines — a shared recognition that Canada’s vast lands and waters are not just scenery, but part of our cultural DNA.
A Call for Action
This isn’t just symbolic. The EKOS survey found that Canadians overwhelmingly support protection of nature:
- 65% support government funding for programs that protect nature and biodiversity
- 65% agree that it’s unfair for corporations to receive government subsidies if their activities harm nature
- 64% are concerned that the United States will attempt to exert control over Canada’s water resources
These numbers echo what we at Nature Canada have heard from communities nationwide: Canadians want action — not just words — to protect our natural legacy.
Protecting What Unites Us
The EKOS survey shows a deep and resonant truth: nature isn’t just part of Canada’s geography — it’s part of who we are. And if we want to preserve our identity, we must defend the living lands and waters that define it.
Nearly 9 in 10 Canadians believe that nature is a key part of our national identity — are you one of them?
As we move toward key political decisions and a shifting climate future, let’s make sure nature remains at the heart of our national story.
