West Ham legend Tony Cottee has slammed the Hammers for not even attempting to sign Aaron Ramsdale when he left Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
Ramsdale pushed for a move away from the Gunners in the summer as he didn’t want to spend one more season being the number 2 behind David Raya at Arsenal.
Several Premier League sides showed an interest in him but the England goalkeeper decided to move to the south coast of England with Southampton.
He is the undisputed number one in Russell Martin’s team and has made a good start to the season despite the Saints’ early struggles as a team.
Cottee indicated that the former Arsenal goalkeeper would have been a great signing for the Hammers in the last transfer window.
The Hammers have made a poor start to the season, winning just one of their opening five Premier League games at the start of the campaign.
They also crashed out of the Carabao Cup following a heavy 5-1 defeat at Liverpool and the Hammers are now facing serious questions about the business they did in the summer.
Cottee insisted that West Ham required a top goalkeeper as neither Lukasz Fabianski nor Alphonse Areola is good enough to be their number one.
The Hammers legend is baffled to see that West Ham didn’t even try to compete for Ramsdale’s signature when he left Arsenal in the summer window.
“Aaron Ramsdale has just gone to Southampton”, Cottee said on talkSPORT.
“Why didn’t we sign him? We needed a top goalkeeper.
“The two goalkeepers – Fabianski and Areola – are number 2s for me.”
Ramsdale will be looking to win his spot back in the England squad in the coming months through his performances as Southampton’s number-one goalkeeper.
